Did you recently find out that you need a varicose vein procedure that is going to cost you a lot of money? Are you worried that you may not have enough funds to cover it? Hope is not lost. Here at United Vein & Vascular Centers, we are here to help. Have you ever thought about your health insurance?

Do You Need A Vein Procedure?

Veins collect blood from the tissues and send it back to the heart. The veins have one-way valves, basically made of two flaps, to keep the blood going the right direction. In the legs, the blood must fight gravity and go uphill to reach the heart. For a variety of reasons, including heredity, prolonged standing or lifting, pregnancies, and female hormones, the valves can give way and allow the blood to flow backward through the vein. This backward flow increases the pressure in the vein, especially when standing, and the vein eventually swells and becomes a varicose vein. Symptoms associated with varicose veins include pain, heaviness, itching, and even Restless Leg Syndrome. Given enough time, the veins can become quite large and lead to swelling of the legs, with purplish discoloration of the lower legs and ulcers.

Will Your Insurance Cover the Treatment?

Most insurers will ask to review the results of a venous ultrasound before covering treatments for varicose veins. Conducted in a vein specialist’s office and covered by most insurance plans, this short procedure will demonstrate the quality of your veins. If the ultrasound shows that your varicose veins are causing swelling, ulcers, heaviness, or backward blood flow, your treatment will likely be determined medically necessary, and your insurer will cover it.
