Common Venous Disease and Treatments

By September 16, 2021December 19th, 2023Vein

What do you know about venous conditions? For many, the first thing that comes to mind are those veins that bulge from under the skin, most commonly in the legs. These are called varicose veins, and they’re a common condition in many adults. Sometimes these veins are nothing more than cosmetic issues, but other times they can result in tightness, discomfort, pain, or swelling of the afflicted area. Gone untreated, the condition can worsen over time. Fortunately, there are several common vein procedures that are fast and easy, with very successful results. We at United Vein & Vascular Centers offer such services in locations across the nation, including areas like West Palm Beach of Florida, or out in Arizona and many places in between. If you have varicose veins, you can place your trust in us to handle your condition with care. Search “vein center near me” to locate our nearest location.

The Experience of Vein Procedures

First, we’d like to ease your concerns by explaining how procedures for varicose veins typically go. If you’re concerned about surgery, then you’ll be relieved to learn that we reserve that for only extreme cases where other options are not available. Otherwise, our board-certified physicians will be using minimally invasive procedures with the aid of cutting-edge technology. There is minimal discomfort with these procedures, they are fast, typically no more than an hour if that, and they’re also fairly inexpensive. Moreover, patients are able to return to their regular activities immediately after the procedure with usually easy recovery periods that are minimally restrictive. All of this is to say that treatment for varicose veins is, in most cases, a smooth and easy process that shouldn’t be a cause for concern for patients.

Which Procedures are Most Common?

At United Vein & Vascular Centers, we have three main procedures we do, based on the afflicted vein’s size  and the vein’s proximity to the surface of the skin.

Laser ablation

Laser ablation is used for larger veins. A catheter is gently inserted into the vein, and radio wave technology is used to scar it. This process offers little discomfort and sounds scarier than it is. The reason why we scar the vein is to force it to close up. The body will then redirect blood flow into other veins that are healthy, and the now damaged vein will simply be absorbed into the body.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is used for smaller veins and spider veins, sclerotherapy is the process of injecting a solution into the vein to cause the scaring rather than using the catheter.

Microphlebectomy

Microphlebectomy, a process used for veins that are very close to the surface of the skin. Rather than trying to scar the vein, it is instead removed through a small nick in the skin. The process is quick, and general anesthetic (which is also used for the other procedures) ensures that discomfort is minimal. The nick is so small that no stitches are required. After each procedure, you’ll keep your leg bandaged for a short time period, and you’ll experience a typically gentle recovery period lasting approximately two weeks.
