Causes of Varicose Veins and Treatment Options

As we get older, many of us notice the veins in our legs become more prominent and visible from under the skin. These can be unwanted, but in some cases, they can even cause discomfort, pressure, tightness, or pain. We at the United Vein Centers are passionate about helping our patients across the country receive the treatment they’re looking for, as well as to be happy with their appearances—free of unsightly veins. Typically, we’re talking about spider veins and varicose veins, which is why we’d like to talk a bit more about the causes of varicose veins today. In Florida, we can provide varicose vein treatments and spider vein removal services for patients in West Palm Beach.

United Vein Centers Doctors are Board-Certified

One thing we’re proud of at the United Vein Centers is our staff of highly skilled board-certified physicians. Being board-certified means our healthcare providers are licensed and recognized by the American Board of Surgery to practice vein-related procedures. This is important because there are doctors out there who are not board-certified, and that can create an added risk of encountering a medical malpractice scenario. It’s important to do your research on the physician who will be performing on you, which you can do by going to the American Board of Surgery’s website and finding their certification checker to identify your physician’s credentials. Be careful to ensure you enter all their information correctly.

What Are the Causes of Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are not only unpleasant to look at but can sometimes be uncomfortable or even painful. These are directly caused by venous insufficiencya condition where, as blood attempts to fight gravity and travel back up the legs, some of it fails and drips back down on top of valves in the veins that keep your blood pumping. This puts added tension on your veins and your legs, and varicose veins can develop as a result. You can work to try and prevent or mitigate venous insufficiency, though.

Walking or running daily is a great way to get the blood flowing in your legs, as does swimming which also helps many different parts of your body. If you feel pain and pressure in your legs, lifting them so that your feet are higher than your torso is a great way to alleviate these feelings. The big reason why venous insufficiency occurs is because of gravity. By lifting your legs, you eliminate that problem from the equation and make it easier for the blood in your legs to flow without problems.
